Christian Louboutin has become the premier shoe designer in the 21st Century. And while his rise to fame has been gradual, it seemed that he was destined for stardom from the first day.
Upon opening his shoe salon in Paris in 1991, Princess Caroline of Monaco was his first customer. She had nothing but nice things to say about Louboutin, and the newspapers spread the word accordingly. Ever since, he has hosted only the most famous of feet in his boutique.
Christian Louboutin grew up in Paris, dreaming that he was somehow Egyptian. In his teenage years he finally visited Egypt. He always had a fascination for shoes, with one childhood event standing out in his memory. He states that he saw a sign in Africa forbidding certain styles of stilettos. It encouraged him to defy that rule.
The resurgence of stilettos in the 1990s has Louboutin to thank. His new shapes and styles captured the imaginations of women everywhere and gave them new reason to try an old style. Further, his signature red-bottomed shoes, called “sammy red-bottoms” are unmistakably Louboutin.
Fair warning, his shoes are not for the budget-wary. The base pair starts around $500. They can go all the way up to $4,000 or even higher depending on the how jewel-encrusted they are.
Without a doubt, when a celebrity need to be as glamorous as possible, she reaches for her Louboutins.
